Pulling the Trigger on Myofascial Pain

Ways to Relieve That Mysterious Pain

Myofascial pain sure is mysterious. You might have injured yourself, but find pain in an area away from the site of the injury. You might also be feeling myofascial pain after a hard day’s work or a couple of sleepless nights. On the flip side, if a part of your body has been immobilized due to an injury, you might start to feel myofascial pain. Myofascial pain can also be caused by hormonal deficiencies, infections, and bad nutrition. But regardless of the cause, with these treatments found below, pain relief is in sight.

Back Pain Treatments - A waste of money ?

Back PainIncidence of back pain increases while spending increases

"Back Pain Spending Surge Shows No Benefit - Americans are spending more money than ever to treat spine problems, but their backs aren’t getting any better," says the New York Times

 And from the Journal Watch

The dramatic increase in pharmacy expenses — mostly attributable to expensive new drugs such as gabapentin, fentanyl, and time-released oxycodone — has not resulted in a corresponding improvement in functional status for these patients.

I have a serious problem with this type of reporting. This was a compilation of surveys and did not provide evidence that treatments were not effective.  But what evidence does it provide?

Cayenne Pepper and Migraine Pain Relief

Next time you feel a migraine coming on, reach for the spice cabinet instead of the medicine cabinet. Capsaicin, the pungent resin found in cayenne pepper, has been studied and proven as an effective pain reliever for migraine pain. Eating your way to being pain free is not the answer though; the nose knows…

Back Pain = Brain Shrinkage

Study: Back Pain Linked to Brain Shrinkage

Neuroscientist Vania Apkarian of Northwestern University has been involved in a series of studies looking at the effect of chronic pain on brain size and density.

In one  study, Apkarian’s team continued to study the brains of people with chronic pain, in this case 10 people with chronic back pain. The researchers measured gray matter in the brains of people with chronic back pain and compared them to a group of 20 people who did not have chronic pain.

Quick Pain Relief Try Heat Therapy or Cold

Heat therapy or cold therapy for quick pain relief and healing?

Two University of Washington sports doctors, Matthew Karl, MD, and Stanley Herring, MD, provide an excellent guide.

Karl and Herring point out that the application of superficial heat to your body can improve the flexibility of your tendons and ligaments, reduce muscle spasms, alleviate pain, elevate blood flow, and boost metabolism. The mechanism by which heat relieves pain is not exactly known, although researchers believe that heat inactivates nerve fibers which can force muscles into irritating spasms, and that heat may induce the release of endorphins, powerful opiate-like chemicals which block pain transmission.

Medical Definition of Pain

women in painSince we send a lot of space here discussing ways that pain effect our bodies and our lives. I thought it was time to start the attempt to define the nature of pain.

Pain may be defined as "an unpleasant sensory or emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage" .

Glucosamine and osteoarthritis - the evidence

arthritis handsThere have been some comments about the effectiveness of glucosamine and chondroitin. Here are the results from some of the best studies that have been done to date that we have looked at.

GAIT

Interest in glucosamine and chondroitin is so great that the National Institutes of Health recently conducted a large-scale study of the supplements for treating osteoarthritis of the knee. More than 1,500 osteoarthritis sufferers at 16 rheumatology centers across the United States participated in the study over a 24-week period. Scientists gave research subjects five different treatment options including glucosamine only, chondroitin only, and a combination of both.
