Dealing with Burnout

How to Cope with Exhaustion

Many health problems are caused by excessive fatigue and stress. In the world that we live in today, burnout and exhaustion is very common and sometimes unavoidable. Many of us have the option of cutting back on our workload, but this is not a luxury that everyone can have. Many of us might also love the activity that we’re doing, but sooner or later that task will become tedious and the individual will begin to feel that he or she is going through the motions. If this sounds like you, you might want to read ahead.

Burnout seems like something that everyone experiences from time to time, but severe burnout can lead to depression and even suicide. If you are frequently sick, exhausted, disillusioned, struggling to sleep, or generally unhappy with your life, you might be experiencing severe burnout. When you do not provide time for your body and mind to relax, burnout will inevitably occur. Burnout can also be caused by too much emotion in your life. For instance, you can become burned out over a relationship with someone you once cherished being with. Since burnout seems to be a direct result of stress, it is dangerous to make decisions based off your feeling of burnout. It becomes difficult to tell if you simply need a time out or need to quit the activity altogether.

When you begin to experience burnout, you should first communicate with everyone and tell them that you need pain relief. You should also determine whether or not you are a workaholic. If you are overly ambitious and take too much on, you need to realize that your body can only handle a limited amount of work before rest becomes necessary. You need time to take off, relax, and even get some therapy.

Relaxation is an effective way to combat burnout if you are unable to get away. You could try muscle relaxation, meditation, and breathing exercises. Heat therapy is another wonderful form of relaxation that you should look into. Massages are also great for relaxation, and there are plenty of electric massagers that allow you to give yourself a massage.

Finally, there are actually some great herbs that can treat burnout:

  • Pasiflora incarnata
  • Scullcap
  • St. John’s Wort
  • Valerian

Burnout is something that happens to everyone. But if burnout becomes severe, you should definitely take the potential seriousness of burnout into consideration. Burnout can cause all sorts of psychological and interpersonal problems and you should see a therapist if your burnout becomes too severe.
