Fibromyalgia: Learning Limits and Balancing Your Life

When you have Fibromyalgia, a condition constituted by widespread pain and fatigue, daily life can be a real struggle.  As I have mentioned in previous posts, some natural ways to reduce Fibromyalgia pain include mainlining good sleep hygiene, getting exercise either in or out of the pool, and herbal therapy.  Other ways to prevent and reduce Fibromyalgia pain naturally are learning your limits and balancing your life.

Learning Your Limits

Learning your personal limits once you have Fibromyalgia is probably one of the hardest things you will have to do to adjust to the condition.  I have had Fibromyalgia for a little over two years now, and I am still unclear on where my limits are.  Discovering your personal limits is important because if you do too much, your body will hurt more; thus, if you can find out what your limits are, you can stay within your boundaries and prevent Fibromyalgia pain.

For instance, I find it is helpful for me to spend some time out of the house at least every other day, but if I spend too much time walking, my pain gets worse and lasts for days after my trip.  Thus, I have discovered the amount I am able to walk to get some exercise without putting me in increased pain.

Unfortunately, I cannot tell you where your limits are; you’ll have to figure that out for yourself.  It will take some trial and error, but I assure you that it is worth it!

Balance

Balancing your life is also important.  As difficult as it may be, you need to focus on things other than your pain, even on your bad days.  Make time everyday to do some work and chores (yes, even on bad days) and set aside some time for yourself to relax.  Doing things you enjoy is important; take some time to:

· Have a nice bubble bath
· Read a book or magazine
· Pray
· Take a walk
· Write in your journal
· Spend time with friends
· Or do something else you enjoy

Having a daily routine will help you stay focused and get the things you need to get done, done.

Some days I do not feel like cleaning or writing.  Some days I don’t feel like doing anything due to the amount of pain I am experiencing.  Yet, I find that continuing to do the things I need to do on bad pain days actually helps me feel better.

It is also important to have a social support system, which I will talk in more detail about in my next post.  Social support can help you relieve Fibromyalgia pain as well.

Discovering your personal limits and restoring balance to your life will help you reduce and even prevent Fibromyalgia pain.  I hope you find these tactics as helpful as I have.
