Natural Pain Relief for Back and Neck Pain

Massage from Wikipedia CommonsChiropractic Care, Osteopathy, and Massage

Back and neck pain are very common occurrences today.  Strained muscles, slipped or herniated discs, and pinched nerves are just a few causes of back and neck pain.  There are several alternative and natural treatment options for relieving back and neck pain, some of which are discussed below.

Chiropractic Care

One natural pain relief option for back and neck pain is to visit a chiropractor.  Chiropractors believe back and neck pain is due to misalignments in the vertebrae of the spine, according to How Stuff Works.  Chiropractors also believe that the body cannot function at its best when vertebrae are misaligned because the misalignments interfere with nervous system functioning.  A chiropractor works to correct these misalignments and sees the patient until pain relief is achieved.

Research indicates chiropractic manipulation of the spine is especially helpful for individuals who suffer from sudden, intense back pain.  Of course, only allow a licensed chiropractor examine and perform this type of work on your spine.  Your chiropractor may also have advice for you on your nutritional needs, posture, and exercise.

Osteopathy

Osteopathy is similar to chiropractic care in some ways.  Osteopaths, like chiropractors, believe misalignments in the vertebrae interfere with nervous system functioning and healthy blood flow.  However, osteopaths also look at whether other conditions, unrelated to the back and neck, such as chronic sinusitis may be related to or even causing the pain you feel.

Osteopaths may manipulate the arms, legs, back, and other joints during treatment in order to try to achieve pain relief.  Osteopaths may also prescribe massage, drugs, or surgery, and offer advice on posture as part of treatment as well if it is necessary.

According to How Stuff Works, research has shown osteopathic manipulation can restore functionality to people whose backs were previously immobilized by lower back pain.

Massage

Massage is another natural form of pain relief for individuals suffering from back and neck pain.  More specifically, research has shown Swedish deep-tissue massage is particularly helpful for individuals who suffer from low back pain.  According to How Stuff Works, you should allow your muscles to heal before getting massages if your pain is sudden and severe.  You may also have to wait several weeks to see the benefits of massage on your pain.

Back and neck pain are common forms of pain today, but you can naturally treat them with massage, osteopathy, and chiropractic care.
