Staying Cool, Finding Pain Relief

Swimming poolIt’s Hot, Hot, Hot!

It has been so hot here in the Western part of the United States lately!  The hot weather makes my chronic pain condition worse.  I hear this is a common problem for many individuals who have chronic pain, especially those with Fibromyalgia.  Furthermore, finding pain relief can be difficult if you do not have an air-conditioned residence.  However, there are some techniques you can utilize to cool down on hot summer days and nights, which may help your pain levels decrease.

Fans

The most common method for cooling off in the summer if one does not have air conditioning is to use fans.  Fans come in all shapes and sizes and some of them rotate while they blow air.  Having a fan blow on you during hot summer days and nights can help you feel cooler.

Additionally, you can put a bunch of ice cubes into a shallow pan in front of your fan.  When the ice melts, the fan will blow ice-cold water onto you, which will also help you cool down during the day or night!  If you use this technique at night, put the container with ice cubes at the same height as the top of your bed so the ice-cold water blows directly onto you.

Cold Showers

Taking cool or cold showers during the day will also help you cool down.  After your shower, dab some of the water off of yourself so that you are not dripping, but you are also not completely dry.  Having some of the cool water stay on you will help you feel cool for a while after your shower.  Likewise, take a cool shower before bed and do not dry yourself off completely before you put on your nightclothes and go to bed.

Wet Sheets

I saw this idea on WikiHow and I think it is both unique and a good way to cool yourself off at night.  Take your top sheet off of your bed and drench it in cool or cold water.  Wring it out so that the sheet is not dripping water any longer, but is still wet.  Use the cool wet sheet to cover yourself up when you go to bed.  This will help you feel cool as you try to go to sleep.

Water

Drink a lot of water in the summer.  Not only will water prevent you from becoming dehydrated, it will also make you feel cool on the inside as it goes down your throat and into your stomach.

Additionally, play in the water!  Doing water activities in the summer is a fantastic way to cool down.  Run through the sprinklers, go swimming, join a water exercise class, or do any other water activity you enjoy.

I hope these tips help you stay cool this summer during the days and nights.  If you have pain, staying cool should help relieve some of the pain you feel.  For more ideas on how to stay cool, please check out the links in the sources section of this post.
