Healing the Injury
Carpel tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a painful condition in which an individual experiences numbness, pain, and/or tingling in the wrist, first three fingers, and the thumb. Carpel tunnel is typically caused by repetitive hand motion, such as typing or factory work. However, some hormonal changes, such as taking birth control, menopause, and pregnancy as well as some health conditions, such as diabetes and thyroid disease can also lead to CTS.
No matter what led to your CTS, there are natural things you can do to relieve the pain and inflammation associated with the condition. Several herbs have been shown to be effective in decreasing CTS symptoms.
How CTS Occurs
The carpel tunnel is formed by the two wrist bones and a thick band of tissue known as the carpel ligament. CTS occurs when the thick band of tissue in the wrist becomes inflamed and the nerve inside the wrist, responsible for communicating signals between your brain and your hand, is pinched.
Bromelain
Bromelain is an enzyme, which is derived from the pineapple plant. It helps reduce inflammation by blocking the release of inflammation-producing biochemicals in our bodies.
The Doctors Book of Herbal Home Remedies suggests a 500mg capsule three times each day between meals. If you take bromelain before or during a meal, it will break down the food you eat rather than reducing inflammation. You can take bromelain until your CTS symptoms go away.
Skullcap and Passionflower
Skullcap and Passionflower can also help reduce CTS symptoms. Skullcap acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and a nerve tonic. Passionflower is also a nerve tonic. The Doctors Book of Herbal Home Remedies suggests drinking skullcap and passionflower as an iced tea twice a day for CTS symptom relief.
To make the iced tea, put one tablespoon of dried passionflower and one tablespoon of dried skullcap into one cup of hot water. Let it steep for ten minutes, then let cool. Put into the refrigerator until you are ready to drink it. You might want to make a large batch of the tea to store in the refrigerator to save time.
Cabbage
I know this sounds odd, but The Doctors Book of Herbal Home Remedies asserts this really helps! Take a piece of cabbage and warm it in the microwave or on a radiator until the cabbage leaf is soft. Wrap it around your wrist and secure the leaf with a bandage. Cabbage acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, and may reduce your pain. You can use cabbage in this way as often as you like for CTS symptoms.
Carpel tunnel syndrome is a painful condition, effecting many Americans in today’s society where so many things are done by computer. These herbs should help reduce your CTS symptoms. Please visit again tomorrow, as I will be talking about even more herbal remedies for carpel tunnel syndrome.
