Herbal Remedies for Heartburn Pain Relief

www.freestockphotos.comRelieving the Burn

Heartburn is a painful, burning sensation that occurs when acid from your stomach backs up into your esophagus.  Heartburn, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disorder, acid reflux, and sour stomach, is typically felt just below the breastbone.  Last week, I discussed how you could prevent and avoid heartburn by avoiding specific foods.  Today, I will be discussing how you can prevent and treat heartburn using different herbal remedies.

Ginger

Ginger is a good herb to soothe your stomach.  To help treat heartburn, drink one cup of ginger tea after you eat a meal.  You can either buy ginger tea in health food and some grocery stores or you can make it yourself.  To make ginger tea yourself, grind up one teaspoon of ginger root and put it in the bottom of a cup.  Add boiling water to the ginger root, cover the cup with a saucer or other small plate, and let it sit for ten minutes before you drink it.  Drink the ginger tea slowly to reap its benefits.

Aloe

Aloe is another herb that can be used to treat heartburn.  Taking one to three teaspoons of fresh aloe juice can help ease heartburn.  The Doctors Book of Herbal Home Remedies says you should take fresh aloe juice instead of the concentrated form because fresh aloe juice contains more of the active ingredient, which is beneficial to your stomach.  Additionally, you should not exceed the dosage suggested on the bottle because aloe juice taken in large doses works as a laxative.

Licorice

Licorice lozenges may not taste great, but licorice root helps calm the burning sensation associated with heartburn.  You can take one to two deglycyrrhizimated licorice (DGL) lozenges after meals for heartburn.  If you have normal blood pressure, you can take regular licorice lozenges; DGL lozenges do not contain the component that raises blood pressure and are recommended for individuals who suffer with high blood pressure.

Marshmallow

Marshmallow tincture is helpful for indigestion.  The Doctors Book of Herbal Home Remedies recommends taking between 10-40 drops of marshmallow tincture each day for the treatment of heartburn.

It is important to note eating marshmallows you can purchase at the grocery store for topping hot chocolate or roasting them on a bon fire do not contain marshmallow root, which is the ingredient that helps settle your stomach.  You can find marshmallow root tincture at health food stores.  You should purchase tincture that contains one part marshmallow root to five parts of liquid for the root to be effective.

Swedish Bitters

Taking one capsule or one teaspoon of Swedish bitters before eating meals helps you digest food, preventing acid reflux from occurring.

Gentian

Drinking gentian tea also helps you digest food when you drink it before meals.  The Doctors Book of Herbal Home Remedies recommends drinking one cup of gentian tea approximately ten to fifteen minutes before you eat.  You can make gentian tea by putting one teaspoon chopped gentian into a pan with one cup of water.  Bring the water to a boil and let it simmer for ten minutes.  Drain and drink.

Heartburn is a painful condition, occurring when acid from your stomach backs up into your esophagus.  These herbal treatments can help you prevent and treat heartburn effectively.  Look for these herbs in your local health foods stores.

Hey this is great, thanks for the post! My stomach was torn up about a year ago, after a botched dental procedure that left me using Aleve every day for several weeks. I found the aloe vera juice was great at helping ease the pain in my stomach. I also found that Kefir yogurt and papaya juice worked wonders. Then there are the conventional foods that helped as well — toast and mashed potatoes. My digestion is mostly fine these days. I do have the occasional flare-up, but it goes away after monitoring my diet and having these foods regularly.
