Herbs to Cleanse and Heal Cuts

Healing the Hurt

During our lives as humans, we naturally accidentally scratch or cut ourselves occasionally.  We might get a small paper cut, slice a finger on accident when chopping vegetables, or slip and fall, scratching ourselves in the process.  No matter the cause of your cut or scratch, though, you can utilize several of nature’s herbs to help naturally prevent infection and heal your wounds.

Shepherd’s Purse

Shepherd’s Purse is one herb you can use to help clean your cuts and scratches.  Dropping a few drops of shepherd’s purse onto a bleeding cut or scratch will help it stop bleeding.  Additionally, the tincture makes a good antiseptic for cleaning wounds.

Rosemary

Rosemary is another good antiseptic and helps fight infections from setting into wounds.  Rosemary is particularly good to use if you begin to notice the edges of cuts starting to turn red or if you notice puss in the wound, according to The Doctors Book of Herbal Home Remedies.  To make a rosemary solution, break a couple of branches off and pour boiling water over them in a container.  Let the branches soak in the water until the water gets cold.  Dab the water onto your wounds two to four times a day until the redness around your cuts goes away.

Calendula

Calendula has been approved by Comission E in Germany for its abilities to aid in the healing of cuts.  Commission E is similar to the Food and Drug Administration in the United States, except Commission E also regulates the safety of herbs.  Calendula acts as an antibacterial and an anti-inflammatory.  The herb also supports the growth of new tissue around the wound, which promotes its healing.

The Doctors Book of Herbal Home Remedies suggests putting a few drops of calendula tincture into cuts every few hours and putting calendula salve onto scratches every time you change your bandage.  However, the book also warns you should not continue to use this herb when the cut or scratch starts to scab because it will interfere with healing once the wound reaches this stage of healing.

Rosemary, calendula, and shepherd’s purse are three herbs you can use to help cleanse and heal cuts and scratches.  Tomorrow, I will discuss three more herbs, which can also aid in the healing of scratches and cuts.
