Natural Relief for Kidney Stones

Dandelion from www.wikipedia.comRemedies for Kidney Stones

I have had friends who have had kidney stones, and they tell me it is a horribly painful experience.  Kidney stones are particles of undisolved minerals, which may lay dormant in the kidney for years before your body decides to pass them.  Kidney stones range in size from a grain of sand to a marble or dime, and they must pass through a tube the size of a piece of spaghetti from the kidney to the urinary tract.  The tube through which kidney stones must pass through is known as the urreter.

If your doctor decides to allow you to pass the kidney stone, it will be painful, but there are some natural things you can do to both help you pass the stone more easily and prevent future kidney stones from occurring.

Dandelion or Goldenrod

Dandelion is a natural diuretic, which increases urine output, which in turn stimulates the flow of blood through the kidneys.  While diuretics can sometimes deplete potassium, dandelion does not do so.  In fact, dandelion contains as much potassium as a banana.  To make dandelion tea, put two teaspoons of dried dandelion into one cup of boiling water.  Steep for fifteen minutes before drinking.

Goldenrod is another herb that can help you pass kidney stones in its tea form.  Goldenrod also helps heal inflammation, which is caused as a kidney stone passes.  To make goldenrod tea, put two teaspoons of dried goldenrod into one cup of boiling water.  Let it steep for fifteen minutes before drinking.

Gravel Root

Gravel root helps soften kidney stones and relaxes the urreter, which allows the stone to pass more easily and less painfully.  Additionally, gravel root helps prevent future kidney stones.  The Doctors Book of Herbal Home Remedies suggests taking 30 drops of gravel root tincture three times each day.

Marshmallow Root or Corn Silk

Our urinary tracts consist of a lining of mucous membranes, which is supposed to help protect the urinary tract.  As a kidney stone passes through, however, that mucous lining is often destroyed.  Drinking marshmallow or corn silk tea helps repair the damage done to the urinary tract by the passing stone.

To make marshmallow root tea, us two ounces of root to every one quart of water, allow mixture to boil for five to ten minutes.  To make corn silk tea, add one ounce of corn silk to one pint of hot water and wait five minutes for the mixture to cool and thicken.

The Doctors Book of Herbal Home Remedies suggests drinking three cups of marshmallow root or corn silk tea each day before each meal.

Kidney stones are painful as they pass through our systems to get out.  These remedies should help kidney stones pass through more quickly and easily.  Please come back tomorrow and learn about even more things you can do to help your kidney stone pass more smoothly.
