Natural Prevention of Kidney Stones
Kidney stones are very painful to pass. Even though they may seem small in size, ranging from the size of a grain of sand to a marble or dime, these kidney stones must pass through something as small as a piece of spaghetti, which makes the task difficult and painful. The other day I talked about some of the ways in which you can help ease the process of passing a kidney stone. This post will focus on even more ways you can help your body pass a kidney stone as well as how to prevent stones from occurring in the future.

Cranberry
Cranberry is well known for its ability to cleanse and protect the urinary tract. Cranberries can prevent and help treat urinary tract infections. Cranberries can also help prevent kidney stones from forming in the future. Preliminary research suggests cranberries may decrease the amount of calcium present in the urine. This is important because the most common kidney stones are formed from calcium oxalate or calcium phosphate.
The Doctors Book of Herbal Home Remedies suggests drinking 16 ounces of cranberry juice each day to prevent the formation of calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate kidney stones.
Saw Palmetto
Saw Palmetto not only helps prevent kidney stones from forming, but it also relaxes the tube through which kidney stones must pass to exit the body, making passing a stone easier and less painful. The Doctors Book of Herbal Home Remedies suggests taking one 160mg capsule of saw palmetto two times each day. Alternatively, you could take ½ teaspoon of saw palmetto tincture three times every day for kidney stones.
Fluid
Research has shown the importance of drinking plenty of water for preventing stones from forming. Women who drank 11 8-ounce glasses of water every day were 38% less likely to form kidney stones than women who drank six 8-ounce glasses of water each day, according to one research study.
Additionally, lemonade has been shown to be effective in preventing kidney stones as well. Drinking a lot of fluid allows the kidneys to dilute the amount of chemicals present in the urine, which helps prevent the formation of stones.
Avoiding Certain Foods
If you are prone to kidney stones, you may want to avoid certain foods known to increase oxalate, one of the chemicals needed to form the most common types of kidney stones. Foods that increase oxalate in the body include: nuts, chocolate, tea, spinach and other leafy vegetables, strawberries, rhubarb, and wheat bran.
If you have ever had a kidney stone, you are at higher risk for developing more in the future. You can utilize these tips to help you prevent the formation of painful kidney stones in the future.
