Many ailments including arthritis, back pain, asthma, heartburn and high blood pressure may be caused by dehydration.
You may be dehydrated and not even know it. A doctor once told me, if you feel thirsty, then you’re already dehydrated. Drinking water not only quenches your thirst, but it can help with many of the ailments that you may be suffering. What if you could drink enough water to help your back pain?
How much water do I need to drink a day?
Research has shown that you should drink an ounce per your body weight. So, if you weigh 130 pounds, then you should be drinking 65 ounces of water per day, or an equivalent of 8 glasses a day. In order to stay hydrated, you should try to drink 6-8 glasses of water per day, and sparkling water does not count.
When you exercise, you might as well drink a glass of water before and a glass of water every 20 minutes while you exercise. Also, make sure you drink more water on hot days and when you are sweating.
Alcohol and caffeine tend to remove water from the body, so make sure you drink an extra glass for every caffeinated or alcoholic drink you consume.
Toxic levels in our bodies
Drinking water helps flush out all the toxins we intake during the day - herbicides, pesticides, heavy metals, growth hormones and antibiotics from meat, preservatives, artificial coloring and additives, processed food, the list goes on. Purify your body by drinking water.
Ailments
Research was done by Dr. Batmanghelidj, who is an expert on preventative and natural treatments, and found that drinking water can help with certain ailments.
Back Pain is found to be caused by a shortage of water in the discs and spinal column. Water helps cushion the weight of your body. Look at the discs in your back like small hydraulic shock absorbers with fluid filling the outer shell. When there is enough fluid in the body, these discs will hydrate themselves. However, dehydration can cause swelling, pain and soreness. When you keep hydrated, you might be able to end most neck and back pain. The same goes for arthritis. Since fluid is needed to help joints move easier, dehydration can cause joints to swell, stiffen and become painful. I thought my chiropractor was crazy when he said he could tell I was dehydrated when he did my adjustments.
High blood pressure starts when the blood vessels don’t have enough water, as your body tries to make up for the loss of blood volume. With some salt intake and drinking plenty of water, blood pressure may return to normal.
Asthma, and the increased histamine production, can be moderated by drinking plenty of fluids. Hydration and some salt intake may restore fluid in the lungs tissues and the histamine levels may be reduced.
Heartburn, as you may not know, is a result of dehydration, and its wreaking havoc on the digestive tract, a vast sign for dehydration. Due to a decrease of water, your small intestine and stomach lining are destroyed by digestive enzymes and stomach acid. Drinking plenty of water may help.
I was reading an article the other day, and the author had a good idea on how to help us drink more water. She said that she drinks her water through a straw, whether it be an actual straw, or one of those refillable sip water bottles or squeeze water bottles that you can buy from the store. She said it made her drink more and she had fun while she did it. I think I might have to try it.
