Down and OUT
I really must apologise for my prolonged absence of late, I have been battling the most debilitating cold. And this isn’t your average, run-of-the-mill runny nose-sore throat wimpy cold, which is incidentally bad enough, but a horrible one with the accompanying headaches, sinusitis, body aches, toothaches and more symptoms than I care to remember.
It took away a week of my working life, something I cannot afford at all as a writer with deadlines, but it would’ve eaten up more time if I hadn’t used some granny recipes to stop in in its tracks
Tastes horrid, works like a charm
I realised to my great chagrin that although I used only natural remedies, they still managed to be extremely unpalatable. I was handed a steaming cup of black coffee (which is how I like it thankfully), and I joyfully took a big gulp. Only to receive a rude shock when the black ground pepper liberally mixed in it, made my eyes water. Managing to stop short of a projectile incident, I gulped down the rest of the nasty concoction, which to my surprise (and displeasure, because I was hoping it would fail) worked like a charm on my sore throat and blocked nose.
Honey
The next evil mixture I was handed was a spoonful of honey. Delicious, I thought, and was proved instantly wrong. Because I was told it was honey, and I was to sick to check, I swallowed a tablespoon of honey which had turmeric mixed into it. Vile. But again very effective, the sore throat vanished, with a smooth coating of honey in my esophagus.
Lemon and Honey
Now this was the first tasty remedy that was given to me; hot water, lemon and honey. Divine. I drank gallons of the stuff, leading to my speedy recovery and overall energy levels. My mother sometimes alternated the lemon concentrate with barley water, and that tasted great too. Beats black pepper coffee any day!
Inhalation
The worst part of a cold is the blocked nose and the clogged, heavy feeling that settles on the head. The cure for that was really nice; a pot of boiling water with a menthol pain balm (I used Vicks VapoRub), and a towel to cover us both. Lean over the pot of water, breathing in the steam emanating from it. Clears up blocked noses instantly. Keep tissues handy, because once the nose starts to unblock it can get pretty messy. This treatment is like being in a personal sauna, and it has the effect of cleansing the skin beautifully.

Thanks for the tip! I tried with a single clove but my courage gave out in the end.
Wow! Those sound like some great home remedies. Of course the best way to fight a cold or a sore throat is to try to avoid one in the first place. I rarely get a cold any more and have not had the flu in 5 years now.
