Healing Touch for Pain Relief

Can healing touch help people suffering from pain?

You’ve heard of therapeutic touch that came out in the 1970s that was said to help pain sufferers.  Nursing schools were teaching it worldwide in hopes of comforting patients before and after surgery.  But have you heard of healing touch?  Healing touch is a little like therapeutic touch; however there is no actual contact between the patient or the practitioner. Those searching for alternative medicine believe the spirituality of this treatment can help with several ailments.

What is healing touch?

Healing touch is a holistic treatment closely linked to healing through spirituality or energy, distant healing and therapeutic therapy. Yet, there is no touching involved.  The practitioner holds his or her hands several inches over the patient’s body.  It’s said to help restore health by changing the patient’s flow of energy.  The belief is people are naturally healthy, but their thoughts and their way of life make them sick. And to make someone healthy, the person’s energy has to be fixed.

What can healing touch help?

There are several diseases people believe healing touch can help.  Pain is one of the major reasons people seek practitioners who use healing touch as an alternative treatment. Healing touch has also been said to help with healing infections and wounds. Much like yoga and meditation, healing touch may be able to help with stress and anxiety.

Although there is no research backing up healing touch, it is generally safe to try and relieve pain and other symptoms, as long as you stick with other treatments that are working.  Do not use healing touch for life-threatening or serious problems.  Do not use it in place of your current treatments.  And make sure you tell your physician that you are trying alternative treatments with or without conventional treatments. It may not be safe for you.
