Lemon - A short introduction
A couple of days ago, I wrote about being under the weather because of a virulent cold. In spite of all the natural remedies that usually work, this one refused to go away, till i realised that I was suffering a lot less than the person I caught it from. So they did work, just not enough to cure it permanently. Now that I think about it, they probably would’ve cured it, if I had had the courage to continue with those remedies for more than a day.
In any case, I digress. One of the staple drinks I have every morning is hot water with lemon. No sugar, no honey, just lemon. And I feel like a star for the rest of the day. Why? Because lemons just are that great.
Hot Water and Lemon
This takes a little getting used to, but I advise getting used to it because it really is worth the trouble. If drunk first thing every morning, is has the effect of cleansing the system totally. Toxins get flushed out, and because lemon is a natural grease cutter (that’s why all dish washing soaps have it), it has the effect of breaking down fat cells. It is also a good liver tonic and since lemon juice aids circulation, people with heart problems will find it a great tonic to boost heart action.
As a welcome side effect for me during this cold, it soothes my throat and clears the congestion.
Natural Bleach
Lemon is a completely natural bleach, for the hair and even the skin. Rubbing a used lemon on the skin will definitely lighten it a couple of shades. People with dry skin may want to use lemons on their faces very sparingly, as it is also a very strong astringent, and dries up the skin by taking away all the sebum.
In the East, women use a lot of oil on their hair to nourish it. As a matter of fact, there are Indian ladies I know who never have unoiled hair. While that is really a personal judgment call, the benefits of having warm oil massaged into the scalp are numerous. Lemons are great for getting the oil off the hair. When washing off the oil, for extra nourishment, mix a raw egg with the juice of one lemon. Apply it to the hair half an hour before washing, allowing it to dry. Wash off the concoction and shampoo as normal. This is great is using a mild shampoo. Usually mild to normal strength shampoos will not get the hair oil off in the first go.
Other Uses
Pure lemon juice can be applied to cold sores, and if done repeatedly throughout the day, will cure the sore totally. It also works on ulcers in the mouth.
Lemon juice is great for acidity. Drinking a glass of lemon juice mixed with soda will clear up heartburn quickly, providing instant relief.
