More on Massage Therapy

From migraines and back pain, there are different types of massages that can treat your ailments naturally

When you walk into an establishment that offers massages, you want peace and quiet. You want a place that is surreal. But most importantly, you want a place that is clean. There are different types of massage therapy that can focus on certain ailments. Massage therapy is one of the oldest treatments that relieve pain naturally.

There are several types of massages. Just make sure you choose an establishment that is professional and has certified massage therapists. These places should set you up with a massage therapist that can focus on your specific type of need.

Common types of massage

  • Swedish
  • Deep tissue
  • Trigger Point
  • Sports
  • Cranial Sacral
  • Reflexology
  • Hot Stone

Swedish

The most common type of massage, Swedish massages eliminate toxins in the muscles, increase oxygen levels in the blood and eases tension while improving flexibility and circulation. It is the best known type of bodywork performed today. Often times, lotion is used to prevent friction while long, gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart are made. Other techniques are stretching, circular pressure to hands and palms, firm kneading, bending and percussion-like tapping.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massages are similar to Swedish Massages, however the massage therapist is focused on removing knots and releasing chronic muscle tension by massaging the deepest layers of tendons, fascia and muscle tissue. Eliminating scar tissue and reducing inflammation are other benefits. You may be sore for a few days after one of these massages before the benefits are revealed.

Trigger Point

Also known as myotherapy, trigger point massage is designed to release the pain source through different cycles of isolated pressure and release. Patients participate in deep breathing and helping find the exact point of pain. Trigger points are areas that are found in between muscle tissues that send pain to other parts of the body. For example, the trigger point could be in the back causing pain in the neck. After one massage, patients have found a significant relief in pain. Toxins are eliminated from the tissue and energizing endorphins are released.

Sports

Anyone from a professional athlete to a weekend jogger can get a sports massage. These usually focus on a specific area such as a knee or shoulder. They can be used to help with pre-event preparation or speed up recovery time.

Cranial Sacral

Also referred to as craniosacral therapy, a professional therapist will help align bones, and possibly eliminate negative effects of stress. This massage may help relieve migraines, TMJ, back and neck pain and other ailments surrounding the head. It’s a noninvasive form of alternative medicine that works with the fluid around the skull and spine. You can see why it would be so important to find someone licensed to do this massage.

Reflexology

Through specific points in the feet and hand it has been said to help balance the nervous system. The therapist will stretch the hands and feet and apply pressure to certain points that correspond to certain organs and parts of the body. Ailments such as back pain, tension headaches, arthritis and digestive problems have been known to be relieved through this massage, as endorphins are released, stress is reduced and the equilibrium of the body is restored.

Hot Stone

This treatment increases circulation and metabolism, as well as melts tension away and eases muscle stiffness. Water-heated smooth stones are placed on the body at key points. This treatment is known to help with back pain, fibromyalgia, stress and anxiety, muscular aches, rheumatic and arthritic conditions and poor circulation.
