How to Ease Painful Sinuses
Every spring and fall, I suffer greatly from allergies. I seem to be allergic to everything in this area. I live in the forest in the Sierra Nevada foothills, so I get the benefit of being exposed to all the grasses, all the trees, and all the fungus.
I work in the valley about 20 minutes and 1200 feet in elevation away from this forest. So there I am exposed to different grasses, agricultural fields, and cultivated almond, olive, and fruit trees. I especially suffer when the rice fields are burned and during the valley’s frequent windy days.
Because of these continual symptoms, I seem to be in danger twice a year to developing sinus infections. I really do not want to take antibiotics, because they cause a wide span of other problems and symptoms. So, the key is keeping myself in good physical condition.
Whenever I do not get enough sleep, I sneeze more. In fact, I often sleep through the night, but right when I open my eyes at dawn’s light, I start itching, sneezing, and watering. Whenever I get a surge of adrenaline, my symptoms get worse. The only solution I’ve found for this is to strengthen the immune system.
That involves:
- Exercising
- Getting Enough Sleep
- Eating Properly
I have found some other substances that ease my allergies
- Oat straw
- Cat’s Claw
- Stinging Nettle
- Bee Pollen
- Local Honey. Eat it raw.
- Eucalyptus oil. Drop a few drops of essential oil in a steaming hot bathtub.
- Hot showers
- Humidifiers
- Vick’s vapor rub on the chest, or under the nose. The instructions say not to put it inside any mucous membranes, so do not place inside your nostrils, so matter how clogged up you may be. Also, do not use it in humidifiers, as per the instructions on the bottle.
These herbs and other substances can take a while to work. Sometimes I do not know if something I’ve tried worked or if the pollen in the air has subsided. Sometimes, taking a traditional, over-the-counter antihistamine pill is exactly what I need to get me through the day.
Le me know about your success stories.

It did and I noticed that you recommend eucalyptus which is also an ingredient in the nasal spray. Sinol is what it’s called and it was just recommended by Dr. Peter Gott so you may want to try it when looking for a more immediate relief…I’m going to try your suggestion but can you recommend a good place to purchase the stinging nettle, cats claw and oat straw… I live in North Carolina now, and where I am, health food stores are hard to find. Thanks
Thanks for your comment, Michelle, and for your suggestion on using Sinol. I’ve had varying degrees of success with nasal sprays but this one I haven’t tried. Of course I always recommend talking to a doctor before taking some of these supplements and treatments. I’ve had luck buying from Puritan’s Pride.
