Taking Care of a Stomach Virus

You can relieve symptoms of a stomach virus, naturally.

It’s that time of year again, when the dreaded stomach virus is said to be going around.  You get anxious when you think about your kids going to school because it only means one thing, someone is going to get sick.  Someone sitting next to you at work says she’s not feeling well, and you want to move as far away as possible.  You can’t afford to get sick - the kids need you, your husband can’t do it alone and you can’t miss any more days from work. Several components cause stomach viruses.  And there are a few things you can do to help the symptoms and even possibly, get it to move on.

Symptoms of a stomach virus

A stomach virus is often called the "stomach flu" although there is no relationship to this illness and the influenza virus.  The symptoms of a stomach virus are:

Spreading the virus

The virus is very contagious and is usually spread by people not washing their hands.  Bodily secretions, like saliva and feces are the main culprit.  Food poisoning is also recognized as a stomach virus.

How to help remedy the virus

You are sick to your stomach, pains are shooting through your abdomen and it sounds like a truck revving its engine inside your gut.  Diarrhea is the inevitable outcome. There are some foods that you can eat that will help calm the storm.

  1. yogurt (Just so you know, my son had diarrhea for a month or so and his pediatrician recommended yogurt or yogurt powder.)
  2. garlic - raw garlic may cause an upset stomach, so be careful
  3. green tea
  4. ginger
  5. peppermint
  6. green leafy vegetable like spinach
  7. cranberry juice

Preventing the virus

  • Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds after using the bathroom, eating, changing a baby, etc.
  • Do not eat foods that may be contaminated
  • Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth as these habits could be why you get sick in the first place.

To feel better quicker, take a warm bath.  Tuck yourself in bed.  Get your rest.  As you can’t get better without it.
