Since we send a lot of space here discussing ways that pain effect our bodies and our lives. I thought it was time to start the attempt to define the nature of pain.
Pain may be defined as "an unpleasant sensory or emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage" . Although the mechanisms of pain and pain pathways are becoming better understood, it should be emphasized that an your perception of pain and its meaning are complex involving psychological and emotional processes in addition to activation of neural pathways . Pain intensity is not proportional to the type or extent of tissue damage but may be influenced at many sites for many reasons within the nervous system. The perception of pain depends on the complex interactions between neural impulses in ascending pathways, in relation to the activation of descending pain-inhibitory systems.
This framework provides the basis for a comprehensive approach to the assessment and treatment of your pain. There is no single approach to effective pain management. Instead, your pain management should take into account the stage of disease or injury, any other medical conditions you may have, the characteristics of pain your pain, and your feeling and reactions to the experience of pain. You should recognize that pain and its treatment changes over time.
