Relieving Neuropathy Pain Naturally: Magnetic Therapy
As I have been discussing, there are several ways in which you may be able to relieve neuropathy pain naturally. Neuropathy is a painful condition whereby nerve damage occurs, most commonly caused by diabetes. I have already discussed the possibility of acupuncture, relaxation techniques, massage therapy, and reflexology for relieving pain caused by neuropathy. If these therapies have not been successful for you, or if you still have some neuropathy pain, you can also try to relieve your pain with magnetic therapy.
The efficacy of magnetic therapy is highly debated, yet many individuals have found it to be beneficial for reducing the pain they feel.
Research on Magnetic Therapy for Pain Relief
One study, conducted in 1997 at Baylor University, tested the efficacy of magnetic therapy on 50 post-polio participants who were experiencing muscle and/or arthritis pain. The study was a double-blind trial in which each individual was randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group received active magnets, while the other group received placebo magnets, inactive magnets.
The results indicated that 76% of individuals who had the active magnets reported a decrease in the amount of pain they felt while only 19% of those who had the inactive magnets reported a decrease in the pain they felt. While the Baylor University study lends some support for the efficacy of magnetic therapy, several other studies discovered no significant differences in those who were treated with active versus inactive magnets.
The Theories Behind Magnetic Therapy
There are a few theories about how magnetic therapy reduces pain. First, some speculate that magnets create heat, which leads to blood vessels expanding, which in turn allows blood to flow more easily throughout the body, carrying oxygen and nutrients to painful areas and removing waste and toxins from them. Second, others speculate that magnets’ stimulation of certain pain points causes the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, and serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain, which causes your body to be more relaxed. Third, others believe magnets create a field, which changes the way pain signals are sent along the nervous system.
If you are interested in trying magnetic therapy for your pain, you can find several products with magnets in them with the claim that the product will benefit your health. On the market today, there are magnetic shoe insoles, mattresses, bracelets, jewelry, blankets, and wrist, ankle, and back straps.
If you have tried or try magnetic therapy for your neuropathy pain, I would like to hear your experience. Please feel free to comment and let us know if magnetic therapy was efficacious for you or not.
