Soothe Post-Surgery Pain Naturally
We do not need our wisdom teeth to function. In fact, when one’s wisdom teeth come in, they tend to hurt. Sometimes, our wisdom teeth even decay after they come in because they are hard to brush. Thus, most dentists recommend having your wisdom teeth removed, especially if they are impacted. While the level of pain one experiences after surgery varies from one individual to another, most people do feel some discomfort after having their wisdom teeth extracted, if only for a day or two after the procedure.
Wisdom Teeth Extractions
As I explained above, we do not need our wisdom teeth any longer, and because they often cause problems, dentists generally recommend that one should have his or her wisdom teeth removed. A dentist will most often refer you out to an oral surgeon to have your wisdom teeth extracted. Typically, people have either two or all four wisdom teeth extracted at a time.
Most oral surgeons will prescribe some sort of painkiller for pain relief after the surgery. However, there are also plenty of natural things you can do to relieve your post-surgery pain.
Ice and Heat
One thing you can do to relieve pain naturally after wisdom teeth extraction is to put ice or heat on your face. After I had my wisdom teeth removed, my dentist sent me home with a cold compress, which I put on the sides of my face to reduce the swelling caused by the extractions. Over the next week, I continued to use the cold compress on the sides of my face whenever I felt a lot of pain in my gums.
Reducing the swelling immediately after you have your wisdom teeth removed is an important step to take in reducing the amount of pain you feel. If heat feels better on your face than ice does, use a hot compress to reduce swelling and pain naturally.
Salt Water Rinses
Another thing that not only helps reduce pain naturally, but also fights off infection and keeps your gums clean is warm salt water rinses. Put a teaspoon of salt into a cup of water, stir it up, and rinse and gargle the warm salt water around your mouth several times throughout the days following your wisdom teeth extractions. I found the rinses really soothed my aching gums, and it did a good job of protecting my gums from becoming infected after surgery.
Food
Finally, you can avoid causing yourself more pain by eating the right types of food after surgery. It is best to stick to food that isn’t solid for a couple of days after your surgery. Some good foods to eat may include:
· Applesauce
· Pudding
· Jell-O
· Yogurt
· Oatmeal
Additionally, if you discover your gums are sensitive, you may want to leave these foods out/let them cool down to room temperature before you eat them. Some people find it difficult to eat hot or cold foods after having their wisdom teeth removed.
Having your wisdom teeth extracted will be uncomfortable for a few days after the surgery; however, in the long run, it is worth it. I hope you find these natural pain relief suggestions useful.
