Feet from WikipediaShoes, Epsom Salt, and Insoles

Many people suffer from foot pain due to wearing uncomfortable shoes or shoes that do not fit correctly.  Additionally, if you stand on your feet a lot during the day, your feet may hurt a lot as a result.  Fortunately, there are several ways in which you can naturally relieve foot pain.

Shoes

The first thing you should do in order to naturally relieve foot pain is to ensure you have the right kind of shoes.  There are a few companies, such as the Good Feet store, Z-Coil, and the Walking Company that specialize in very comfortable shoes.  They also have staff that will work with you one on one to help you find the right shoes for your feet and your specific pain problems.  Having the right shoe can reduce your foot pain significantly.

The right shoe for you will have ½ inch of space between your big toe and the end of the shoe.  You should be able to wiggle your toes upward, and the shoes should feel comfortable right away, not requiring a “breaking in” period.  Additionally, the shoes should have adequate padding and you toes should not feel squeezed together in them. It is a good idea to go shoe shopping after a long walk or in the afternoon when your feet have swelled in order to ensure they fit at all times of the day.   Ensure that both feet feel comfortable in the shoes before you purchase them.

Epsom Salt

If you spend a lot of time on your feet during the day, try soaking your feet in a tub of water and Epsom salt.  I have heard that this helps relieve foot pain, though I have not tried it yet myself.  You can purchase Epsom salt at your local department or grocery stores.  Follow the instructions for mixing on the back of the bag.

Insoles

Insoles are another way in which you can naturally relieve foot pain.  Insoles help absorb shock, provide cushion for your feet, prevent moisture and odor, and provide support for your arches and heels.

You can purchase insoles at many drug, department, and athletic stores.  One of the most popular-selling insoles is made by Dr. Scholl’s.  However, there are many other types of insoles as well.  I currently use Dr. Scholl’s insoles in my shoes and they do help reduce my foot pain.  But be advised that what works for me may not necessarily be what works for you.

If you suffer from foot pain, you might want to try some of these suggestions to see if they help you naturally reduce it.  If your foot pain continues or gets worse, please visit your doctor to assess if your foot pain is due to a medical condition.
