Natural Pain Relief for Nueropathy: Biotin, Folic Acid, Inolsitol, and Lecithin
Yesterday, I discussed how vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, and B12 can help reduce the pain one feel from peripheral neuropathy, a condition by which nerve damage is caused and is most often caused by diabetes. There are also several other vitamins in the B-complex that can help reduce neuropathy pain naturally.
First, biotin is an essential vitamin for cell reproduction and cell growth. While biotin is most commonly taken in daily doses of 8-800 micrograms per day, research has shown bigger doses of biotin can help reduce neuropathy pain.
A study conducted at the University of Athens indicated biotin’s effectiveness in treating neuropathy naturally. Individuals with peripheral neuropathy were given 10mg doses of biotin through intramuscular injections three times a week for six weeks. They also took 5mg of biotin by mouth during the study period.
Participants’ neuropathy symptoms began reducing significantly by four to eight weeks of being treated with the biotin. Not only did participants’ pain decrease, but they also found it easier to climb stairs, stand, and walk. Participants also noted they had fewer leg cramps and that restless leg syndrome disappeared. Biotin at these doses had no negative side effects for the participants, which suggests individuals can take 10-15mg of biotin a day for the treatment of neuropathy pain safely.
Folic acid is another vitamin in the B-complex that may be useful for neuropathy. Folic acid is significant in the body’s metabolic processes, such as the synthesis of DNA. Folic acid is also important in the maintenance of nerve cells. The Recommended Daily Allowance of folic acid is 400 micrograms per day.
Inolsitol has also been found to be beneficial for neuropathy. A study at the University of Alabama discovered putting participants on a diet that was high in inolsitol improved their nerve function significantly. Some foods that are high in inolsitol include grapefruit, cantaloupe, peanuts, and whole grains.
Finally, Lecithin may or may not be helpful in the relieving neuropathy pain. When you buy the vitamin Lecithin in a health food store, it will contain Phosphatidylcholine (PC), which in turn produces choline, which produces a chemical known as acetylcholine. These chemicals are important to the production of myelin, which covers and protects the nerves within the nervous system.
While there is no research on the effects of these chemicals on neuropathy, research has found that lecithin and choline are beneficial in treating other neurological disorders.
The B vitamins are a good natural way to relieve neuropathy pain. It is best to take the B vitamins together, as in B-complex, which can be found in grocery stores, drug stores, department stores, and health food stores.
