Relieving Neuropathy Pain Naturally: Vitamins C and E

I have been discussing how one can relieve neuropathy pain with vitamins.  Vitamins C and E may also be beneficial for relieving neuropathy pain naturally.  Not only will I discuss how these natural antioxidants can help relieve your pain, I will also tell you how you can obtain each supplement, so that you can try them out for yourself.

This post is part of a series of posts on how you can relieve neuropathy pain naturally.  To start at the beginning of the series, please visit my post on Relaxation Techniques for Neuropathy.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, and it can help protect against neuropathy in diabetics by reducing the concentration of a type of sugar, Sorbitol, in the bloodstream.  The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin C was set at 60mg quite a long time ago.  Since then, it is believed vitamin C in daily doses of 500-1000mg are beneficial to our bodies and our health.

How to Obtain Vitamin C

Vitamin C is easily obtained.  You can eat vitamin C as a part of your diet in several fruits and vegetables.  Fruits and vegetables that contain vitamin C include:

· Grapefruit
· Tomatoes
· Potatoes
· Green peppers
· Cantaloupe
· Broccoli
· Mangos
· Strawberries
· Oranges
· Kiwis
· Watermelon
· Spinach
· Brussels sprouts
· Raspberries
· Honeydew
· Cauliflower
· Red peppers
· Papayas

If you love these fruits and vegetables, getting enough vitamin C will be an easy and delicious task for you!  If you don’t care for these foods, however, you can obtain vitamin C in supplements over the counter at grocery, department, health food, and drug stores.  Vitamin C generally comes in 500 and 1000mg tablets.  You can get vitamin C in pill form or chewable form.  V

Vitamin E

Not only is vitamin E good for your heart, it is helpful in sustaining normal neurological processes within the body.

There hasn’t been a lot of research on the effectiveness of vitamin E for neuropathy; however, one study showed the efficacy of vitamin E for children with peripheral neuropathy who also had a deficiency of this vitamin.  The study was conducted in 1995 in Israel at the Institute of Chemical Pathology.  Children who had a deficiency in vitamin E received intramuscular injections and oral supplements of vitamin E.  The results indicated significant improvement after treatment with vitamin E in the children’s neuropathy.

Sources of Vitamin E

Vitamin E can be found in several foods.  The following foods contain vitamin E:

· Dry roasted almonds
· Sunflower oil
· Dry roasted hazelnuts
· Dry roasted peanuts
· Raw mango
· Soybean oil
· Broccoli
· Smooth peanut butter
· Sunflower seed kernels
· Wheat germ oil
· Safflower oil
· Spinach
· Corn oil
· Kiwi

If you do not like these foods or if you do not typically eat them, you can purchase vitamin E supplements over the counter at any store that sells vitamins.
