Hello,

I m 30/male

one month back i felt severe pain on my lower back., and after doctor’s initial checkup; I did MRI on doctors prescription

My MRI report

The lumbar vertebral bodies apper normal in height, alignment and marrow signal intensity.

Intervertibral discs at L 3-4,L 4-5 and L 5-s1show reduction in normal T2W hyperintensity suggesting Disk Dehydration.

Posterio central disk protrusions are seen at L 3-4, L 4-5 and L 5-S1 causing thecal indentations at L 4-5 no significant compressive effects detected.

Central spinal canal and neural canals at all levels appear spacious

spinal cord exhibits normal signal intensity, conus ends at D12

The facets joints show normal cartilagenous spaces bilaterally at all the levels.

ligamentum flavum appears normal at all level.

liganmentum flavum appears normals at all levels.

No abnormals pre or paraspinal soft tissue signal intensity is seen.

MR myelography reconfirms the above findings

Routine scanning of the whole spine does not reveal any other significant abnormality.

I m feeling no pain now a days but soon going to join a job of sales and marketing..

So please suggest how much caution do I need to have…is there any chance of cure..

Please do tell me ..I really want to know.

Interestingly you have healthy spine. See the spine is not a fragile structure like many think. It is a very strong part which has the power to lift heavy weights & sustain heavy impactions. You will be in trouble if you are not moving about & doing some exercises. The best I recommend is swimming if you can, apart from a bit of care you take when lifting heavy weights, never bother about your back……..keep doing everything you can.

See most of the people get back issues due to faulty posture & lack of physical fitness.

So this aspect is very important.

What you have to do now is to join a gym if you can & do 45 minute exercises twice a week ( exercises like treadmill walking, bike riding are advised).this is called aerobic regimes…..swimming also come under this class. So what you need is to spend some time for your body & understand the complex anatomical structure which enables u to walk, lift, is nothing but a complicated machine which obeys all the principles of maths & physics. If you are not oiling it properly it will rust. The loss of flexibility & lack of aerobic endurance is the cause of all pains.

Make sure you don’t protect your back a lot, make it flexible & move, use the knee to bend &lift weights otherwise no restrictions carry on with any jobs.

Take the confidence from me. We can hurt our back, it is not the end of the world or career…….it is absurd.

My lecture to u is not a friendly motivate talk, this is totally based on new researches…….the main people who can contribute to back pain treatment & care is the patient himself. In many cases you don’t see them doing their part, it is partly due to lack of proper awareness & because of the myths about back pain.

I must say that I am sorry to point out that we professionals also contribute a lot in this cases….giving the patient a lot of don’t & does……without realizing that a joint is meant for movement…stopping movement will not help in all cases…….you have to maintain the flexibility as much as possible, learn about proper body alignments.

In the end……change position quite often, bend the knee when lifting weights.

Use lumbar support when driving or sitting….have a work station assessment if possible for proper ergonomic seatings. If you make your self fit with flexibility &fitness regime interspersed with awareness of proper alignment in activities & work, then you will never have this issue again.

Take care.

Dear fellow,

You have an enviable spine… many people need such spines but end up hurting it badly…

You can just do some short term exercises and avoid excessive back breaking jobs and you will be fine… and nothing in the world is such that cant be cured or restored… so jus relax and you will be fine…

As already said… you can carry on with swimming or light free hand exercises n you should not have a problem.. as for the work you do see to it that you don’t sit for more then 45 min at a place at a time and you shall not have any problem… enjoy

About yoga I have a slight variation from what normally doctor has to say…

as of now I have found an increase in the number of patients coming to me due to faulty practice of yoga… as they have not been taught properly)…they just do stretches after reading form some website or book). Ensure you have a guru who knows his stuff n also a proper environment too..

DO NOT WATCH TV AND ATTEMPT STUNTS THAT ARE SHOWN IN THE NAME OF YOGA…

Rest every thing is fine n u can enjoy your pain free and event free life… cheers
