TENS machines for back pain

I have had chronic lower back pain for about 30 years on and off. Some days it's not too bad, but other days I could go mad with it.

I don take prescription pain relief sometimes, but find that using a TENS machine really helps (when it's not absolute agony)

The TENS machine I have has several automatic settings, and it runs in different cycles for 15 minutes at a time, I usually find that after about 4 cycles the pain is much less for a hour or 2.

Does anyone else on here use a TENS machine? I'd be interested to hear what you think.

Hi, though TENS in not really appropriate in my case. I have heard great things about it for back pain and other types. Is that 15 minutes total you use it for? or 4 cycles of 15 minutes.

No, TENS machines aren't good for somethings, but can be a real help for others. I was originally recommended to use one by the anesthetist at the pain clinic, that was years ago, and the machines were new then, very big and bulky, it was like trying to tune in an old radio!

I use it for at LEAST 4 x 15 min cycles, so for an hour in total, sometime I leave it on for even longer!

The new machine I've got now has about 15 built in programs. Without going to get it (my back is good today - Praise The Lord) I know that the last 2 programs are a mix of all the different “pulses”.

There are short sharp pulses, massage, vibrating types and loads more - I will get the book out later and post what they are. But the final 2 progs are both the 15 min therapies, the 1st is for pain in the upper half of the body, and the other for the lower half.

As I said, I will get the details on here soon as I can.

I've got chronic back pain due to osteoporosis and a spinal fracture. I didn't find Tens helped me. However I have found something that has - an Acticare TSE machine. It has Tens settings as well but the TSE is more powerful than a Tens machine. I use it twice a day for half an hour and it has really made a difference. You just put the sticky pads onto your spine. It's very easy to use. Hope this helps someone else.

Christine, what is a TSE machine? I have never heard of it. I have heard of tens machines, but have to say that I've never heard of TSE machines.

Can you tell us more about them please? What type of pain can they help?

Hi Christine, thanks for shring that, but can you please tell me what is the difference between a Tens and a TSE? I know that with a tens machine you shouldn't place the pads directly over the spine, but put them on either side.

Is it the same with a TSE machine? As you said that you put them over your spine?

Would be interested to know
