It is generally known as analgesia is a diverse group of drugs used to relieve pain. Since it is now used very popularly; but we all know that every drug has a side-effect. So, this thread is dedicated to the discussion of the side-effects of this drug. As a start I would outline the side-effects of COX-2 inhibitors which are one of the major classes of Analgesic. The role for this class of drug is still questioned vastly because of the post-launch data which indicated increased risk of cardiac and cerebrovascular events with these drugs occurred due to an increased likelihood of clotting in the blood initiated because of decrease in the production of protoglandin around the platelets causing less clotting factor to be released.

Please elaborate the side–effects of other types of this drug.

Paracetamol as compared to COX-2 inhibitors has few side effects and is regarded as very safe, although excessiveness may lead to Analgesic Abuse Nephropathy (AAN) caused due to collective lifetime use of large amounts (≥ 2 kg and hepatotoxicity (liver damage). NSAIDs incline to allergic reactions, renal failure, peptic ulcers, and occasionally hearing loss, and they can amplify the risk of hemorrhage by distressing platelet function.[citation needed] The use of particular NSAIDs in children under 16 which are suffering from viral illness may contribute to the development of Reye's syndrome.

Aspirin and the other NSAIDs actually work by decreasing prostaglandin production; resulting in reduction of pain and also inflammation while working action of paracetamol is not really well understood yet.

Opioids, have also some side-effects. Experiencing nausea and vomiting is common for patients starting morphine. This is usually of the ratio to 1 in 3. This may be relieved by antiemetics. Pruritus (itching) may cause switching to a different opioid. Constipation occurs in almost all patients on opioids, and laxatives (lactulose, macrogol-containing or co-danthramer) are typically co-prescribed.

Also risks such as addiction and the body becoming used to the drug (tolerance) can occur. However there is no upper limit there is a still a toxic dose even if the body has become used to lower doses. The effect of tolerance means that drug dosing may have to be increased if it is for a chronic disease this is where the no ceiling limit of the drug comes into play.
