This thread is to discuss about the drug and for what purpose you use it. If you are a user of this drug in some form or another share your experiences over here. This drug is used in several forms depending on the patient’s disease and pain.

These drugs act in various ways on the peripheral and central nervous systems; they include narcotic drugs such as morphine, synthetic drugs with narcotic properties such as tramadol, paracetamol (acetaminophen), the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as the salicylates, and various others.

This drug has also major side-effects. I don’t know much about this but major one experienced by me is the allergy on my hands because of which my doctor had to reduce the doses

The use of analgesics is a major and rapidly growing sector of the pain-control field and new discoveries are made almost every year. But before this discovery strong liquor was been used in the past as an agent for dulling pain, since, ethyl alcohol has the CNS depressant effects, so it was used most notably during the Civil War. However, the ability of alcohol to “kill pain” is said to be poorer to practically all analgesics used today (e.g. morphine, codeine). Therefore, the idea of alcohol for analgesia is in general considered as being as primitive as the practice in virtually all industrialized countries today.

It must be noted that the choice of analgesia dictates the side-effects and not all analgesia has any major reported side-effects and also Topical analgesia is generally recommended to avoid systemic side-effects but this choice is vastly determined by the type of pain as quoted by Dworkin:

The choice of analgesia is also determined by the type of pain: for neuropathic pain, traditional analgesia is not really effective, and there is often benefit from classes of drugs that are not normally considered analgesics, such as tricyclic antidepressants and anticonvulsants.

Dworkin RH, Backonja M, Rowbotham MC, et al (2003). “Advances in neuropathic pain: diagnosis, mechanisms, and treatment recommendations”.

Well I would like to add here that the choice of analgesia in addition to be determined by the type of pain; the severity and response to other medication as well determines the choice of agent; the WHO (World Health Organization) pain ladder, originally developed in cancer-related pain, is widely applied to find suitable drugs in a stepwise manner.
