Hello Everybody. Hope you are doing fine

I just want to ask something as I've heard about a new drug made in ths US which is specially developed for fibromyalgic people.

I don't know about you, but here in Brazil(as im currently over there) we still need to compose unique, specially laboratory-made drugs for each person, since we don't have a good medicine for fibromyalgia. So the possibility of a new treatment made me consider it as a good solution. Have anybody ever listened something about it? If you have please tell me what have you heard..does it really works…

There are already over 200 prescription drugs that can be used to treat fibromyalgia. Pregabalin (Lyrica) has been FDA approved for the purpose and duloxetine, milnacipran (both SNRI antidepressants) and sodium oxybate (a sleep aid which increases growth hormone secretion and relieves pain and depression) are waiting to gain FDA approval. I believe duloxetine will be the next one approved.

But that does not mean that these drugs are any better for fibromyalgia than the other prescription drugs - it just means that a pharmaceutical company has gone through the necessary trials. Low dose naltrexone, for example, is a much better drug, but because its patent has expired, it is unlikely to become officially approved for this purpose.

The New Fibromyalgia Drug

The first ever approved drug for fibromyalgia has been released and is LYRICA. I have some but stopped taking it while having surgery (due to tends to produce bleeding with excessive use) I have not yet given it a good test run. Up to now they have been giving us anti psychotic drugs. You can probably GOOGLE it for more information……

Also, I am not aware of anything here in the U.S. that is a proven, effective treatment, but I have heard of a promising drug called Milnacipran which I believe is being used in Europe, and which is in Phase III trials here…

Actually, they just approved a second drug for fibromyalgia two days ago, Cymbalta (duloxetine). I would say that duloxetine is probably more likely to cause some improvement, but pregabalin may be more likely to lead to major improvement (and help symptoms other than just pain and depression). But no one has yet done a study where these drugs have been compared, this is just my personal opinion as an expert. And like I've said before, low dose naltrexone is probably more effective - and tends to be _much_ better tolerated. And it is very inexpensive.

Some antipsychotic drugs can be used to treat fibromyalgia and it doesn't imply that people with FM are psychotic or otherwise mentally ill

For example olanzapine is an antagonist of the 5-HT3 serotonin receptor, which can be very useful in the treatment of FM. However, antipsychotic drugs often have significant side effects - e.g. olanzapine causes almost half of people to have major weight gain - so they should be reserved for refractory cases. Luckily there are dozens of treatments with very few side effects!

If you want to stay up to date on FM treatment news, I recommend following this page on my book's website where I post all recent updates: http://www.brokenmarionettebook.com/?updates

And we have even more good news, this time about the anticonvulsant lacosamide. You can read them at http://www.brokenmarionettebook.com/?updates
