More Herbs for Arthritis

Ginger from www.wikipedia.comAlleviating Aching Joints

Millions of American adults suffer from arthritis each year.  While there is currently no cure for this painful condition, modern medical and natural remedies both exist to reduce the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis.  I have already discussed some of the herbs available to treat arthritis.  This post examines even more herbal remedies for the condition.

In order to discover the herbal remedies I discussed earlier, please read: Herbs for Relieving Arthritis Symptoms.

Guaiacum

Guaiacum is a great herb to use when you are experiencing severe arthritis symptoms, mainly severe inflammation and pain.  The Doctors Book of Herbal Home Remedies suggests drinking three cups of decoction to help relieve severe symptoms.  Guaiacum promotes blood flow to painful joints and removes damaged and dead cells, which are a result of inflammation.

In order to make a cup of decoction, put one teaspoon of guaiacum wood chips and one cup of water in a pan and bring to a boil.  Allow the wood chips to simmer in the water for 15-20 minutes before straining and drinking.

Ginger

Ginger is another herbal treatment for arthritis.  Ginger, eaten everyday acts as a pain reliever.  Ginger is also known to soothe the stomach, while many non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) pain relievers upset it.

The Doctors Book of Herbal Home Remedies suggests eating one teaspoon of ginger each day for the relief of arthritis pain.  The book also provides instructions for preserving ginger.  Cut ginger into thick slices, place them in a jar, and cover them completely with vodka.  Store in the refrigerator for as long as you need to.

When you go to buy ginger, ensure it is fresh and organically grown.  The book advises old, chemically treated, shriveled, or moldy ginger will not be effective in relieving pain.

Cayenne

Cayenne is another herb that aids in the relief of painful joints.  Cayenne contains an active ingredient known as capsaicin, which is believed to interrupt our body’s pain messenger, substance P, and to encourage our bodies to release endorphins, our own natural painkillers.  Capsaicin also promotes blood flow in the joints.

The Doctors Book of Herbal Home Remedies recommends getting an ointment containing 0.075-0.025% capsaicin and applying it to painful areas three to four times each day.  Remember to wash your hands after applying the cream to affected areas, and never put cayenne into rashes or open wounds.

Arthritis is a painful condition, affecting millions of adult Americans everyday.  These herbal remedies should help you relieve some of the inflammation and pain you experience as a result of the condition.

Prevention is better than cure and natural better than patent, synthetic should be a last resort.
