How to Find A Good Alexander Teacher for You

White rose from WikipediaThe Alexander Technique: A Great New Way to Help Relieve Pain Naturally

In my last post, I discussed how utilizing the Alexander Technique could help you reduce back pain.  Learning the Alexander Technique often requires you take 20-40 private lessons from an Alexander teacher.  In this post I will be discussing how you can find the right Alexander teacher for yourself in order to teach you the Alexander Technique, which may allow you to relieve your back pain naturally.

Alexander Technique

As I discussed in my last post, new evidence indicates the Alexander Technique may be beneficial in the short-term and long-term for relieving chronic back pain.  The technique also appears to have several other advantages including:

· Improving recovery after a surgery or an injury
· Reducing the pain and weakness associated with repetitive motion and poor posture
· Improving breathing abilities for athletes and individuals who suffer from tuberculosis, asthma, and/or panic attacks
· Relieving stage fright

You can use the Alexander Technique with almost any other activity you do, so it is important to find a teacher who will teach you how to use the technique properly.

How to Find An Alexander Teacher

Alexander teachers, as with any other professionals, have different levels of competence.  The first thing I suggest you do is ask all of your family, friends, and co-workers if they know any good Alexander teachers.  If they do not, you will have to do an Internet search for Alexander teachers in your area.  If nothing comes up in your search, I’d suggest looking up Alexander teachers in your phone book.  If nothing is listed under this category, try calling your local natural pain centers to see if they have any instructors or know of anyone who does.

Once you find an instructor, you should pay attention to how you feel during your first lesson in order to determine if you have found a good Alexander teacher for you, suggests Barbara Conable, an Alexander teacher in Columbus, Ohio and author of the book, How to Learn the Alexander Technique – A Manual for Students.  She asserts if you are feeling freer, are more able to choose free movement, and feel more awake, you have found a good technique teacher.  She also asserts you can tell if you have found a good instructor if he or she moves with ease, is alert, and has good balance.

Conable also suggests an instructor’s willingness to work with you on the activity or activities you are experiencing difficulties with says a lot about how good of an instructor he or she is for you.  For instance, if you are having problems with your back while riding in your car and your instructor is unwilling to watch you drive to see what corrections he or she can help you with, this may not be the best instructor for you.  Conable does note, however, many students are able to transfer what they learn in lessons to their everyday activities, but it is certainly something you should consider.

Alexander teachers can be certified or uncertified.  Personally, I’d be more comfortable with a certified teacher, but the choice is an individual one.  What may be more important than certification in some situations is an instructor’s competence and how you feel in lessons.  All of these factors are important to consider and none of them should be overlooked.

The Alexander Technique may help you relieve pain naturally.  In searching for the right teacher for you, I encourage you to take these aspects into consideration.  For more information about Alexander teachers you may want to visit Barbara Conable’s article, “How to Choose An Alexander Technique Teacher.”
